Trips planned by Robin · Ubud, Indonesia

Bali Itinerary: The Perfect 7 Days.

Seven days is the right amount of Bali for a first visit if you split it in two: three nights in Ubud for the rice terraces, temples and jungle ridges, then a driver south to the Bukit peninsula for three nights of clifftop Uluwatu, surf and sunset kecak fire dance. This plan does exactly that, with the island's two personalities kept whole instead of blurred into one long scooter blur. Every stop is real, from Tirta Empul's holy springs to a barefoot rice-field lunch at Sari Organik.

Ubud for the first half, Uluwatu or Pecatu for the second
Total driving
About 4 to 5 hours with a driver across the week, most of it the one move south
Best months
May to September, the dry season

Robin recommends
Guard day 4: it carries the move, a beach and the kecak dance, so skip nothing else that day

Bucket-list foods in Ubud

Babi guling

Bali's ceremonial spit-roast suckling pig, crackling skin over spiced rice. The island's most famous single dish.

On this trip: Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka, day 2 lunch, opposite Ubud Palace

Warung nasi campur

The everyday Balinese plate: rice ringed with small portions of whatever the kitchen cooked that morning. The best ones are unglamorous and local.

On this trip: Warung Ijo, your first dinner in Ubud

Rice-field organic lunch

Vegetables grown in the paddies you walked through to reach the table. A very Ubud ritual.

On this trip: Sari Organik, day 3, reached on foot through the fields

Jimbaran-style grilled seafood

Whole fish over coconut-husk coals with your feet in the sand. This plan stays on the Bukit's cliffs instead, so ask Robin to swap a Jimbaran Bay dinner in and it will.

Where to stay for this itinerary

Stay in Central Ubud if…

Stay in Uluwatu / Pecatu if…

Stay in Seminyak or Canggu if…

Before you go

Do you need to drive in Bali?

No, and most first-timers shouldn't. Hiring a car with driver is inexpensive, normal, and how this plan moves: one longer transfer from Ubud to Uluwatu on day 4, short hops otherwise. Scooters are everywhere but Bali traffic is not the place to learn one.

What must be booked ahead?

The kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple sells out in high season, so get tickets for the day-4 sunset show early. Book a surf lesson a day or two out. The famous warungs on this plan take no reservations, you just queue.

How do you get in from the airport?

Denpasar (DPS) is the island's one airport. Ubud is about 90 minutes north by car, longer in afternoon traffic, so a pre-arranged driver beats negotiating on arrival. The trip ends in Uluwatu, conveniently only 30 to 45 minutes from the airport.

Is 7 days enough for Bali?

For the Ubud-plus-Bukit shape, comfortably. What it leaves out are the islands: Nusa Penida's cliffs and the Gilis each want a day or more, and the volcano sunrise treks want a pre-dawn start. Those are the reason to stretch to ten.

When should you go?

The dry season, May through September, is prime: this plan's mid-July dates mean reliable sun and the busiest crowds. The shoulder months of May and September keep the weather and lose some of the queue.

8–10 days

Have 8–10 days?

First, let day 4 breathe

With more days you can split the move south from the Uluwatu Temple evening: drive down, swim at Padang Padang, and save the kecak dance for its own unhurried sunset.

Day 8: the Nusa Penida boat day

Fast boats leave from Sanur for Kelingking Beach's famous cliff, Angel's Billabong and Crystal Bay. It is a long, bumpy, completely worthwhile day, and it only works from the island's south, exactly where this trip already sleeps.

Days 9 and 10: slow finish, your pick

Either two idle nights in Sanur for calm-water swims and easy airport logistics, or push on to the Gili Islands for reef snorkelling and no motorbikes at all. Ask Robin for whichever finish fits your flight.
