Trips planned by Robin · Tallinn, Estonia

3 Days in Tallinn.

Tallinn in three days splits naturally into three cities: the walled medieval one on the hill, the creative one in Telliskivi's factory yards and Kalamaja's wooden streets, and the seaside one from the Seaplane Harbour out to Kadriorg's palace gardens. This plan gives each its own day, keeps everything on foot or one tram, and lands the big views (Kohtuotsa first thing, St Olaf's 232 steps, Patkuli at the end) when the light and the crowds are right.

Tune your first morning

If you want every anchorkeep the plan and treat it as a loop, not a checklist; the five morning stops sit within a few hundred metres, so the pace is gentler than it reads
If you prefer breathing roomdrop the Toompea Castle interior and stretch out on the Governor's Garden benches instead; the hill's magic is the lanes and platforms, not the parliament building
If you dislike climbsskip St Olaf's 232 narrow steps and take your rooftop fix from Kohtuotsa alone, spending the saved hour in the Pikk street merchant houses

Day 2: Telliskivi, Kalamaja and the raw Baltic waterfront

Today trades cobblestones for creativity and sea air. Telliskivi's studios and street art in the morning, then the Baltic opens up at Patarei and the Seaplane Harbour in the afternoon.

15:30–16:30

5Toompea sunset bench, Patkuli viewing platform Sight

Quieter than Kohtuotsa and facing the harbour, a calm last look at the spires before you head off.

Robin's tip. In mid-June the sun barely sets; the 'sunset' bench at Patkuli is lovely at 15:30 but magical near 22:30, when the spires glow and the platforms are empty. It's a five-minute walk from most Old Town hotels, so go back after dinner.

Bucket-list foods in Tallinn

Elk soup in a medieval tavern

Candlelight, clay bowls, no forks: the III Draakon experience is half theatre and entirely worth one lunch.

On this trip: III Draakon, day 1 lunch, on Town Hall Square

Modern Estonian cooking

The new Baltic kitchen: local fish, forest mushrooms and rye reinvented in a 15th-century townhouse.

On this trip: Rataskaevu 16, day 1 dinner

Market food at the station

Smoked Baltic fish and verivorst (blood sausage) from the stalls, eaten standing among locals doing their shopping.

On this trip: Balti Jaama Turg, day 2 lunch

Kohvik culture

Tallinn's cafés do dark rye, kringel pastry and serious coffee; this plan doesn't schedule a sit-down fika, so ask Robin to slot a kohvik hour into day 3 and it will.

Where to stay for this itinerary

Before you go

Do you need a car?

No. Days 1 and 2 are entirely on foot and day 3 is one short tram ride to Kadriorg. Tallinn's Old Town is closed to casual traffic anyway.

What must be booked ahead?

Rataskaevu 16 for day 1 dinner, several days ahead. The rest of this plan walks in; St Olaf's tower and the museums sell tickets at the door.

How do you get in from the airport?

Tram 4 runs from the terminal to the Old Town's edge in about 20 minutes; a taxi is a 10-minute ride. It's one of Europe's easiest airport arrivals.

Can you day-trip to Helsinki?

Yes, ferries cross in about two hours each way, but it costs you a whole Tallinn day. With three days, don't; with four or more, it's a great add-on.

Is three days enough?

Comfortably, for the Old Town, the creative quarter and the sea. What a fourth day adds is either Helsinki or the Lahemaa National Park bog trails, both genuine wins.

4–5 days

Have 4–5 days?

First, slow day 1 down

Move St Olaf's climb to a fourth morning and let the Toompea platforms, the cathedral and the lanes fill day 1 without a clock; the hill rewards lingering.

Day 4: Lahemaa National Park

An hour east: boardwalk trails over raised bogs, erratic boulders on empty beaches, and the Palmse manor. Rent a car for the day or join a small-group tour from the Old Town.

Day 5: Helsinki by ferry

Two hours across the Gulf for design shops, Suomenlinna's sea fortress and a sauna; take the earliest boat out and the late one back.
