Trips planned by Robin · Roseau, Dominica

4 Days in Dominica: The Perfect Nature & Island Itinerary.

Four days is a real taste of the Nature Island if you base in Roseau and let each day follow one valley: Trafalgar Falls, Titou Gorge and the Wotten Waven sulphur pools stack into a single perfect waterfall day, the Indian River and Fort Shirley fill a day in the north, and Champagne Reef's fizzing volcanic vents close the trip in the water. This plan does it all from one base with a rental car, no repacking, and dinner back among Roseau's Creole kitchens every night.

Day 1: A soft landing in Roseau

Before you go

Do you need a car in Dominica?

Yes. Every stop on this plan sits on winding mountain roads, and taxis for four days of touring cost far more than a rental. Drive on the left, allow more time than the map suggests, and enjoy it; the roads are half the scenery.

What needs arranging ahead?

Very little. National park sites use a site-pass system, so have small cash ready at kiosks, and the Indian River is rowed by licensed local boatmen you meet at the bridge in Portsmouth. If you swap in the Boiling Lake hike, book a certified guide before you fly.

How do you get in from the airport?

Douglas-Charles Airport is on the northeast coast, about an hour and a quarter across the mountains from Roseau. Pick the rental up at the airport and treat the crossing as your first scenic drive.

Is four days enough for Dominica?

For the waterfall valley, the north and Champagne Reef, yes. What it leaves out is the Boiling Lake trek and the Kalinago Territory on the east coast; each honestly wants a day of its own.

Is Dominica a beach trip?

Not in the white-sand sense. Shores here are black volcanic sand and stone, and the island's magic is in its rivers, reefs and rainforest; come to swim in gorges and snorkel over volcanic vents rather than to lie on a towel.

5–6 days

Have 5–6 days?

First, give the Boiling Lake its day

The island's signature trek: a guided, strenuous out-and-back from the Roseau Valley through the Valley of Desolation to the world's second-largest boiling lake. Recover afterwards in the Wotten Waven pools you already know from day 2.

Add an east-coast day in the Kalinago Territory

Cross the island to the Atlantic side for the Kalinago Barana Autê cultural village and the wilder, wave-cut east coast, a completely different Dominica from the leeward calm.

Sleep a night in Portsmouth

Move the north day's base north. You gain a slow second morning at Cabrits and turn day 3's round trip into an easy one-way.
