4 Days in Okinawa: Beaches, Food & Culture.

Four days on Okinawa's main island splits naturally into quarters: a Naha day built around Shuri Castle and the Kokusai-dori evening bustle, one big drive north for the Churaumi Aquarium, Kouri Island's water and the Nakijin castle ramparts at golden hour, a quieter sacred-south day from Seifa Utaki to the Gyokusendo cave, and a slow last morning in Tsuboya's pottery lanes and the Makishi market. It is a rental-car trip by design, and every night comes back to the same Naha bed.

This is the day for the drive north: Churaumi's whale sharks, a soba lunch that's been ladling the same broth since 1905, then the bridge over to Kouri Island for a swim and a sunset castle ruin.

If you care more about water than aquariumsgive Churaumi a quick pass or skip it, and bank those hours for a longer swim at Kouri and an unhurried Nakijin at golden hour
If you hate driving home in the darkask Robin to move Nakijin Castle to before Kouri Beach, so the ruins get the light and you start south earlier

Bucket-list foods in Naha

Okinawa soba

Wheat noodles in a pork-and-bonito broth with soki ribs, the island's everyday soul food and nothing like mainland soba.

On this trip: Shuri Soba, day 1 lunch, and Kishimoto Shokudo on day 2, ladling broth since 1905

Okinawan izakaya classics

Goya champuru bitter-melon stir-fry, rafute pork belly and a glass of awamori, the island's own rice spirit.

On this trip: Yunangi, day 3 dinner, the plan's most traditional table

Market sashimi and umibudo

Sea grapes that pop like caviar and reef fish straight off the ice, eaten upstairs from the stall that sold them.

On this trip: Makishi Public Market, day 4 lunch

Agu pork yakiniku

Okinawa's small native breed, sweeter and fattier than mainland pork, grilled at the table.

On this trip: The day-1 yakiniku dinner off Kokusai-dori

Before you go

Do you need a car?

Yes. Days 2 and 3 cover most of the island and public buses would eat the trip. Note that renting in Japan requires an International Driving Permit arranged before you fly; a home license alone is not accepted.

What must be booked ahead?

The rental car, always, and it's worth buying Churaumi Aquarium tickets in advance since the midday crush is real. Everything else on this plan just needs an early start.

How do you get in from the airport?

Naha Airport sits practically in the city: the Yui Rail monorail reaches the Kokusai-dori area in about 15 minutes. Pick the rental car up on day 2 rather than paying it to sit in a Naha lot.

Is four days enough?

For the main island's classic loop, yes, comfortably. What it leaves out is the outer islands: the Kerama Islands' snorkeling is a fast ferry from Naha and deserves its own day.

When does the swimming season start?

Beaches officially open around late March and early April, exactly this plan's window. The water is brisk but swimmable at Kouri; by June it's bathwater with typhoon season behind it.

5–6 days

Have 5–6 days?

First, split the north drive

Give Churaumi and Kishimoto Shokudo one day and Kouri Island plus Nakijin Castle another, with a night in Motobu between them. Day 2 stops being a race and the castle gets the sunset it deserves.

Add a Kerama Islands day

The fast ferry from Naha's Tomari port reaches Zamami in under an hour, and the snorkeling over those reefs is the best easy water in Japan. Go early, come back for a last Kokusai-dori evening.

Slow the south down

Day 3's sacred sites reward lingering: pair Seifa Utaki with more of the Chinen coast's viewpoints and a second cafe stop, instead of packing Okinawa World's cave and village into the same afternoon.
