4 Days in Cape Town: Table Mountain, the Cape & the Winelands.

Four late-summer days in Cape Town with a rental car and a plan: Table Mountain's cableway and the Bo-Kaap's painted lanes on day one, the full peninsula arc of Chapman's Peak, the Boulders penguins and Cape Point on day two, Constantia's wine and Kirstenbosch's canopy walkway on day three, and a Clifton swim with the Zeitz museum to finish. The history is not skipped: District Six and the Bo-Kaap sit right beside the postcards.

Day 1: The mountain, the Bo-Kaap and District Six

Your first full day belongs to the mountain and the old city below it, go up early while the light and the queues are both short, then wander down into Bo-Kaap's cobbled, candy-coloured lanes for a dose of Cape Malay history before a sunset perch on Signal Hill.

6EL Burro Taqueria Kloof Nek Eat

Cape Town's favourite Mexican spot near Kloof Nek, a fun, casual close to a big first day.

Robin's tip. The cableway sells a cheaper first-hour ticket and the mountain is calmest before the wind picks up; if the famous tablecloth cloud is down, flip this day with day 3 and go up when it lifts.
Day 2 · Friday

Day 2: The peninsula arc, penguins to Cape Point

This is the big peninsula day. Chapman's Peak's cliff-hugging drive, penguins at your feet at Boulders, and the windswept walk out to Cape Point where two oceans nearly meet. Wear shoes you can hike in and bring a swimsuit for Boulders.

Pace the green day

If you want the day to flow without doubling backstart at Kirstenbosch when the gates open, walk the Boomslang in morning light, then settle into Groot Constantia for a long tasting-into-lunch; the Constantia Nek viewpoint sits naturally between them
If you are serious about the wineadd a second estate after Groot Constantia and push Kirstenbosch to late afternoon; the garden's golden hour under the mountain wall is its best light anyway
If you would rather swim than swirlkeep one tasting, drop the Nek stop, and take the saved hours at Llandudno or an earlier Clifton visit; ask Robin to retime the day and it will

Bucket-list foods in Cape Town

Cape Malay bobotie

Spiced, fruit-sweetened baked mince under a savory custard, the Bo-Kaap's signature dish and the Cape's oldest fusion food.

On this trip: Jonkershuis at Groot Constantia, day 3 dinner

Constantia wine at the source

The Cape's oldest estate has been pouring since 1685; taste in the cellar, then walk the vines you just drank.

On this trip: Groot Constantia, day 3 morning

Fish and calamari on a naval quay

Harbourside, unfussy and dead fresh, with the peninsula's fleet bobbing alongside.

On this trip: Bertha's in Simon's Town, day 2 lunch

A proper braai

South Africa's open-fire ritual: boerewors, chops and long conversation. The plan does not include one; ask Robin to find a braai evening and it will.

Before you go

Do you need a car?

Yes, for this plan. Days 2 and 3 are driving days by design, Chapman's Peak and Cape Point have no sensible transit option, and driving is on the left. Parking is straightforward everywhere the plan goes.

What must be booked ahead?

The cableway ticket (buy the flexible one; weather rules the mountain), Cape Point's park entry is simpler prepaid, and dinner bookings for the Constantia and Waterfront evenings. Zeitz MOCAA tickets are easy online.

Is Cape Town safe for this trip?

The places on this plan are the well-visited spine of the city and peninsula. Use city sense: no valuables visible in the car, park in attended lots, avoid walking empty streets after dark, and take ride apps at night rather than wandering.

How do you get in from the airport?

Pick the rental car up at the airport; the drive to the City Bowl is about 25 minutes outside rush hour, and you will want the car from day one anyway.

Is four days enough?

For the mountain, the peninsula, Constantia and the city's key history, yes, and it feels generous rather than rushed. What it leaves out is the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek winelands proper and Robben Island, each a full extra day.

5–6 days

Have 5–6 days?

First, unhurry the wine day

Split day 3: Kirstenbosch gets a full morning with a picnic, Constantia gets an afternoon of two estates instead of one tasting squeezed before the garden.

Day 5: the winelands proper

Drive out to Stellenbosch's oak-lined streets and Franschhoek's valley for a day of estates and long lunches; it is the region this trip's Constantia morning is auditioning for.

Day 6: Robben Island and the promenade

The ferry-and-tour to Mandela's prison island books out well ahead and takes half a day. Land at the Waterfront, then walk the Sea Point promenade at sunset to close the trip.
