Trips planned by Robin · Zanzibar City, Tanzania

5 Days in Zanzibar: Stone Town & the East-Coast Beaches.

Five days is the right rhythm for Zanzibar's two halves: two nights in Stone Town for the carved doors, the spice stalls and the harbour at golden hour, then a driver transfer across the island for two nights on Paje's white-sand east coast. This plan keeps the history up front (the House of Wonders quarter, the Old Slave Market, Darajani's spice tables) and lets the beach half stay properly unhurried, with dinner on The Rock timed to the tide. No rental car, no backtracking: one transfer, two worlds.

4Sunset at the Sandbank Bar, Paje

A short walk south to the low-tide sandbar bars, where the sunset over the lagoon is the island's best free show.

5Dinner at Kitete Beach Bar & Restaurant Eat

Relaxed beachfront dinner under the stars, a fitting close to your one full Paje day.

Robin's tip. Paje swims by the tide table, not the clock. At low tide the lagoon walks out with you, so keep your swim to the hours either side of high water and give the low-tide flats to the kitesurfers, that is when they fly.
Day 5 · Monday

Bucket-list foods in Zanzibar City

Zanzibar pizza & grilled octopus

The Forodhani night stalls' double act: a stuffed, griddled crepe-omelet hybrid that exists nowhere else, and charcoal octopus skewers with lime.

On this trip: Forodhani Gardens night market, day 2 evening, graze lightly before dinner

Seafood over the tide

Grilled catch and coconut curries eaten on a rock the ocean surrounds twice a day; theatrical, yes, and the setting earns it.

On this trip: The Rock Restaurant, day 3 dinner, booked ahead

Beach-shack grilled fish

Whole fish, coconut rice, feet in the sand; the east coast's default lunch and better for it.

On this trip: A Paje beachfront kitchen, day 4 lunch

Urojo, the Zanzibar mix

Stone Town's tangy street soup of mango, cassava crisps, bhajias and boiled egg. The plan does not pin a bowl down, so ask Robin to swap one into your Stone Town day and it will.

Where to stay for this itinerary

Stay in Stone Town, in or near Shangani if…

Stay in Paje beachfront if…

Stay in Nungwi or Kendwa in the north if…

Before you go

Do you need a car?

No. This plan uses one booked driver transfer across the island (about 75 minutes through spice-farm country) and short taxis; both towns are walked. Self-driving buys you nothing here.

What must be booked ahead?

The Rock Restaurant, well before you fly; it is small, famous, and the tide decides whether you walk or take its boat. The cross-island transfer is best arranged through your Stone Town stay a day ahead. Everything else takes walk-ins.

How do the tides change the trip?

Massively, and it is the east coast's charm once you plan for it. Paje's lagoon empties at low tide into rippled flats, which is when the kitesurfing and sandbank bars come alive; swimming wants the hours around high water. Check a tide table on arrival day.

How do you get in from the airport?

Zanzibar's airport is 15 to 20 minutes by taxi from Stone Town. Have your first night's address written down; the old quarter's alleys defeat most map apps, and drivers drop you at the nearest edge.

Is five days enough?

For Stone Town plus one coast, comfortably. What it leaves out is a spice-farm tour, Jozani Forest's red colobus monkeys, and the north beaches; those are the seventh-day additions below.

7 days

Have 7 days?

Add the spice-farm and forest day

A morning spice-farm tour outside Stone Town (vanilla, cloves and cardamom still growing where Darajani's stalls get them), then Jozani Forest for the red colobus monkeys on the way east.

Give the north two nights

Finish in Nungwi or Kendwa, where the tide barely moves and you can swim at any hour; it is the classic last-two-days wind-down after Paje's kite-blown energy.

Take a dhow day

A boat morning to Prison Island's tortoises and the Nakupenda sandbank turns the harbour you have been watching at sunset into the trip's best swim.
