Trips planned by Robin · Girona, Spain

3 Days in Girona & the Costa Brava.

Girona works best as two cities in one trip: a medieval hill town of cathedral steps, the Call's stone stairways and rampart walks, and, forty-five minutes east, the turquoise coves of the Costa Brava. This plan gives the old town day one and day three, puts Calella de Palafrugell and Tamariu in between for swimming and a seafront rice lunch, and ends with a quiet last wander rather than a sprint.

Choose your coast

If you came to swimplant yourself at Calella de Palafrugell's coves for the whole day and let Tamariu go; one bay done slowly beats two done on a schedule
If you love a cliff path more than a towelkeep the plan and walk a longer stretch of the Camí de Ronda from Tamariu; the pines-over-turquoise views are the Costa Brava's whole argument
If you are here in shoulder season when the water bitestrade the second swim for Begur's hilltop lanes, ten minutes inland, and catch the coast from above

Bucket-list foods in Girona

Xuixo

Girona's own pastry: a fried, sugar-crusted roll filled with crema catalana. The plan leaves your mornings free; ask Robin to point breakfast at a xuixo bakery and it will.

Market charcuterie and cheese

Catalan cured meats, Empordà cheeses and whatever September's stalls are proudest of.

On this trip: Mercat del Lleó, day 1's market lunch

Arròs de peix

The Costa Brava's soupy seafood rice, cooked to order and worth the wait it demands.

On this trip: La Vela d'Or, day 2's seafront lunch at Calella de Palafrugell

Jordi Roca's gelato

The dessert half of the family behind El Celler de Can Roca runs a gelato bar; the flower-topped soft serve is the town's sweet signature.

On this trip: Rocambolesc, day 1 at 18:00, timed as the pre-dinner treat

Before you go

Do you need a car?

For day 2, yes; the Costa Brava's coves have no useful rail link and the C-66 drive is 45 easy minutes. Days 1 and 3 are entirely on foot, so a one-day rental or a day with a driver both work.

What must be booked ahead?

Dinner at Le Bistrot in summer, and the car for day 2. If your dates brush against Girona's Temps de Flors flower festival in May, book the room first and everything else second.

How do you get here?

Girona sits on the Barcelona high-speed line, 38 minutes from Sants station, and has its own airport 20 minutes out; many travelers make it the calm first or last stop of a Barcelona trip.

Is three days enough?

Yes, for the old town plus one coast day. A fourth day opens the medieval villages inland, Besalú above all, and a fifth lets you walk more of the Camí de Ronda between Calella and Llafranc without a car waiting.

Is Girona just a Barcelona day trip?

It is often done that way, and that is exactly why staying the night is the trick: at 19:00 the day-trippers board their trains, and you get the lantern-lit lanes and the rampart sunset to yourselves.

4-5 days

Have 4-5 days?

First, un-cram day 1

Move the city-walls walk to its own evening and give the history museum in the Call the hour day 1 could not spare; the old town rewards a second pass at half speed.

Day 4: Besalú and the medieval inland

The fortified bridge at Besalú is the region's other great medieval picture; pair it with Banyoles' lake for a swim or a lakeside lunch on the way back.

Day 5: the Camí de Ronda properly

Park once at Llafranc and walk the coastal path south to Calella and back for the day, with no car logistics in the middle; it is the coast at walking pace, which is how it was meant to be seen.
