4 Days in Menorca: The Perfect First-Time Itinerary.

Four days fits Menorca's whole argument: Ciutadella's honey-stone old town as your base, the turquoise double act of Cala Macarella and Macarelleta reached on the Camí de Cavalls, a wild-north day from Cap de Cavalleria's cliffs to a lobster-stew lunch in Fornells, and one last unhurried swim at Cala en Turqueta. It is a rental-car trip with picnics in the plan and every table already named.

This is the cove day: turquoise Macarella, then the wilder, quieter Macarelleta reached on foot along the Camí de Cavalls, pack a picnic and take your time.

12:15–13:00

4Picnic at Cala Macarelleta

Carry sandwiches from Ciutadella's Forn Pastisseria Piris (Plaça Nova) down to the rocks here, no facilities, so bring water.

17 km · ~22 min drive
18:00–19:30

5Es Tast de na Silvia Eat

Small, locally loved spot near the old town for Menorcan tapas and grilled fish after a beach day.

Robin's tip. Order the picnic at Forn Pastisseria Piris on Plaça Nova the evening before; the Macarella car park fills by mid-morning in summer, and having lunch already in the bag is what makes the early start painless.
Day 3 · Thursday

Day 3: The wild north, a lighthouse, and the lobster stew Fornells invented

A proper drive north to Fornells country, a lighthouse on wild cliffs, a caldereta de llagosta lunch the island is famous for, then a paddle in Fornells' calm blue bay.

5Paddleboard on Fornells Bay Nature

The bay's flat, wind-sheltered water (famous locally for windsurfing) is ideal for an easy first-timer paddle.

34 km · ~39 min drive
18:00–19:00

6Casual dinner in Ciutadella Eat

Back in town, a relaxed tapas plate near Plaça d'es Born to close a long, full day.

Choose your Fornells evening

If you hate driving the width of the island twice in one daystay north after the paddleboard, take dinner by the water in Fornells' whitewashed quarter, and drive home in the last light instead of doubling back for tapas
If you want Ciutadella's evening buzzkeep the plan; the return drive is 45 minutes and the plaça at dusk is a fair reward for it
If you are wrung out after the lighthouse cliffsskip the paddleboard, take the slow coast road back mid-afternoon, and bank the energy for day 4's swim

Where to stay for this itinerary

Stay in Ciutadella old town if…

Stay in Fornells if…

Stay in Maó (Mahón) if…

Before you go

Do you need a car?

Yes. Macarella, Cavalleria and Turqueta all sit at the end of pine-wood lanes with no bus worth planning around, and the north day crosses the island. Book a small car; the cove car parks were not drawn for big ones.

What must be booked ahead?

The car, well ahead for summer, and lunch at Sa Llagosta, whose handful of tables and famous caldereta both go early. In high summer some southern coves meter their car parks by capacity, so mornings are the reservation.

How do you get in from the airport?

Menorca's airport is outside Maó, about 45 minutes across the island from Ciutadella by car; collect the rental at arrivals and the trip starts on the drive west.

Is four days enough?

Comfortably, for the west and north. What it leaves out is Maó's harbour, the prehistoric taula sites scattered island-wide, and the quieter eastern coves; a fifth and sixth day pick those up without changing your base.

Macarella or Macarelleta?

Both, in that order, which is why the plan walks the 15-minute cliff path between them. Macarella has the postcard and the beach bar; Macarelleta, one cove on, keeps the same water with half the towels.

5-6 days

Have 5-6 days?

First, give the north its evening

Turn day 3 into a full Fornells day that ends with dinner on the bay, removing the plan's one long double-back drive and letting the paddleboard hour breathe.

Day 5: Maó and the taulas

Cross to Maó for the harbour and gin distillery side of the island, and stop at one of the prehistoric taula settlements on the way; Menorca's stone-age monuments are its least-known wonder.

Day 6: the eastern coves

Swim the calas around Es Grau and the north-east, then walk a new stretch of the Camí de Cavalls; the trail circles the entire island, and every extra day earns you another arc of it.
